Professor Dae-Woon Jeong's research team at Changwon National University develops high-performance hydrogen conversion catalyst

Published in the top 3% world-renowned international journal in the field of environmental engineering, 'Chemical Engineering Journal'

Professor Dae-Woon Jeong's research team in the Department of Environmental Energy Engineering at Changwon National University announced on the 7th that they have developed a high-performance catalyst technology that converts waste-derived syngas into hydrogen and achieved the great feat of publishing this result in the top 3% international academic journal in the field of environmental engineering, 'Chemical Engineering Journal (IF 13.2, JCR top 3.6%)'.

This study focused on the structural design and performance improvement of a Zn–Co-based spinel catalyst (ZnCo₂O₄) to convert high-concentration carbon monoxide (CO) in syngas generated during the waste gasification process into hydrogen (H₂).

In particular, the research team designed it by utilizing the 'yolk-shell' structure, which has an empty space between the inner core and outer shell, to overcome the high-temperature instability and deactivation problems of existing Co-based catalysts. The catalyst effectively suppresses metal aggregation and structural collapse even at high temperatures, and is characterized by being able to induce stable hydrogen conversion reactions for a long time, enabling stable hydrogen production for a long time.

The developed catalyst optimized the molar ratio of Zn:Co to maximize the interaction between Zn and Co, thereby realizing a stable spinel structure, and successfully maintained a high conversion rate for more than 30 hours even under reaction conditions that were approximately 200 times higher than those of commercial processes. This is a result of dramatically improved thermal stability, structural durability, and reaction efficiency compared to existing commercial catalysts, and is evaluated as a technology that greatly increases the industrial applicability of the waste resource hydrogenation process.

Professor Jeong Dae-woon of Changwon National University said, “This study is a case that has taken the high value-added energy production technology using waste resources to the next level, and it is a result that proves that structural design is very important for the performance of the catalyst,” and “Since the synthesis process is also simple, it can quickly lead to follow-up verification and commercialization.” This study was conducted with the support of the Mid-career Researcher Support Project, the Next-Generation Promising Seed Technology Commercialization Fast Track Project, the G-LAMP Project, and the BK21 Environmental Energy Convergence Education Research Group, and the research team plans to actively continue follow-up research to advance the waste resource-based hydrogen production process and domestically produce eco-friendly catalyst technology.
