Gyeongnam Province Preemptively Responds to the MASGA Project Efforts to Strengthen Shipbuilding Competitiveness...Korea-US Shipbuilding Cooperation Related Agencies Meeting
Gyeongnam Province announced on the 20th that it will proactively respond to the "MASGA Project," a Korea-US shipbuilding cooperation project, to pioneer new avenues for the local shipbuilding industry and drive sustainable growth.
On the 19th, Gyeongnam Province held a meeting of related agencies at the provincial government office to establish a "Korea-US Shipbuilding Cooperation Implementation Plan," marking the beginning of full-scale preparations.
With representatives from 13 organizations, including shipyards, businesses, related organizations, and universities in the province in attendance, discussions were held on various fronts, including: establishing a foundation for Korea-US shipbuilding cooperation; securing a leading position in the US market for local shipbuilding companies and strengthening their production and quality competitiveness; joint technology development for the development of the shipbuilding industries in both countries; and joint talent development. These discussions aimed to leverage the MASGA Project as an opportunity to secure future competitiveness in the shipbuilding industry.
Shipyards and other businesses argued, "Government guidance is necessary in advance to prevent overlapping and indiscriminate projects related to large-scale cooperation between the South Korean and US governments." They proposed the government's implementation of policies to foster domestic shipbuilding equipment, cooperation programs between large and small businesses, and educational programs to foster domestic youth talent.
Related organizations, including Gyeongnam Technopark, stated, "To facilitate the domestic shipbuilding industry's entry into the US market and the smooth implementation of the MASG project, a pan-government and regional consultative body should be formed to provide tailored and integrated support." They also proposed, "Projects such as the establishment of MRO technology development, support, and research centers, and the establishment of a joint development and cooperation platform for shipbuilding equipment are also necessary."
Vice Governor for Economic Affairs Kim Myung-joo, who chaired the meeting, stated, "Gyeongnam, home to two of Korea's three major shipbuilding companies, is the heart of the Korean shipbuilding industry, home to many small and medium-sized shipbuilders and equipment companies, and is home to world-class shipbuilding technology." He added, "The MASG project is a significant opportunity to once again demonstrate Gyeongnam's capabilities on the global stage and will serve as an opportunity for the Gyeongnam economy to take a leap forward."
Furthermore, he stated, "We will thoroughly incorporate the discussed content into the implementation plan to maximize the profits of local businesses. As soon as the government's direction regarding MASS is concretely determined, including the results of the August 25th Korea-US Summit, we will hold another meeting to continue refining the implementation plan."
Meanwhile, Gyeongsangnam-do plans to deliver to the government the "Korea-US Shipbuilding Industry Cooperation Implementation Plan," which was prepared as a priority and reflects the suggestions made at the working-level task force meeting held on the 14th and the meeting of relevant organizations chaired by the Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs today.
