덕천서원에 식재돼 있는 배롱나무는 여름이면 꽃을 피우며 은은한 자태로 서원을 물들인다.

배롱나무는 삼복더위가 기승을 부릴 때쯤인 7~9월 100여 일 동안 꽃을 피우는 특성을 가지고 있어 백일홍이라고도 불린다.

또 양반나무로 일컬어지며 선비들이나 유학자들이 서원, 향교에 심기도 했다.

특히 100일 동안 붉은 빛을 유지해 선비의 절개와 지조를 상징한다해 충신이나 열사, 선비를 기리는 곳에 많이 심었다.

덕천서원(경남도 유형문화재 제89호)은 ‘을묘사직소’를 쓴 실천성리학의 대가 남명 조식 선생을 기리기 위해 그의 제자들이 건립한 서원으로 산청 조식 유적(사적 제305호) 가운데 한 곳이다.
