[브레이크뉴스=정철규 기자] 진주시는 14일 오전 11시께 이반성면 평촌리 어석터널 인근에서 ‘구.수목원역~함안경계 자전거도로 개설공사’개통식을 개최했다.

진주시와 국가철도공단은 지난 2020년 철도 유휴부지 활용사업 업무 협약체결에 따라 구.수목원에서 함안경계까지 약 38억원을 투입해 지난 2021년 7월 착공해 지난 8월에 자전거도로 7.3km를 조성했다. 

이로써 총사업비 168억원을 들여 함안경계에서 내동면 유동마을까지 37.6km의 ‘참 이야기길 자전거도로 조성 사업’ 경전선 자전거도로가 완성됐다. 

이 사업을 통해 시는 폐선부지가 도심과 농촌을 이어주는 아름다운 자전거 길로 탈바꿈돼, 시민들의 건강증진뿐만 아니라 지역간의 교류 활성화에도 기여할 것으로 기대한다. 

조규일 진주시장은 “진주시는 시·군 협력사업으로 사천시와 산청군를 자전거도로로 연결했으며 함안군은 연결 사업을 추진하고 있다”며“서부 경남의 자전거 인프라 구축 및 관리를 위해 적극 노력할 것”이라고 말했다.
